About the Dental CT Program
Dentists, including specialists such as maxillofacial surgeons, are increasingly utilizing Computed Tomography (CT) scanners to obtain three-dimensional images to evaluate and plan treatment for complex procedures such as surgical implants. Through the use of CT images, dentists are able to view details including the location of nerves and sinuses and realize conditions such as cysts and polyps before performing oral surgery or inserting implants, often allowing for the avoidance of serious complications.
Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) accreditation is widely respected within the dental community, as illustrated by the support of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), who has recently become a sponsoring organization of the Computed Tomography (CT) division of the IAC in support of the Dental CT accreditation program. The IAC Dental CT accreditation program benefits from multi-specialty support, as illustrated by the national, medical societies serving in the role of sponsoring organizations and providing representatives to the Board of Directors. Accreditation is required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). However, patients should remain vigilant in making sure that their Dental CT procedures are performed within accredited facilities, because for some it remains a voluntary process.
