Magnetic resonance laboratories should be aware of the following new developments for the ICAMRL, effective in 2010:

Updates to the ICAMRL Standards

The ICAMRL Standards were updated in December and posted to the website to become effective January 1, 2010. The key revision to the Standards was the addition of Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC). In Part II Section 4, Technical and Interpretive Quality Assessment, recommendations for measurement of Appropriate Use Criteria are now included under 4.2, as follows:

4.2

Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC)

4.2.1

As part of the ongoing quality improvement program, facilities providing magnetic resonance imaging should incorporate the measurement of the appropriate use of this diagnostic imaging examination based on criteria published and/or endorsed by professional medical organization(s).

4.2.2

Overall results should be documented. The percentage of appropriate, inappropriate and uncertain indications for testing should be measured.

4.2.3

A program for education and reporting should be developed and may include but is not limited to:

i.

Patterns of adherence to AUC.

ii.

Baseline rates of adherence.

iii.

Goals for improvement of adherence to appropriate use criteria.

iv.

Measurement of improvement rate.

v.

Confidential comparison reports on patterns of adherence in aggregate by ordering physician, ordering practice and interpreting practice.

Going Digital: Labs Must Submit All Case Studies on CD/DVD

As of January 1, 2010, all case studies (5 for each testing area) submitted to the ICAMRL must be in a digital (CD or DVD) format, with the DICOM viewer included. Film is no longer an accepted format for submitting case studies to the ICAMRL; these cases must first be transferred to CD or DVD prior to submission. It is also recommended that all data be submitted electronically.

Please note: It is not the intent of the ICAMRL to force applicant laboratories into the digital world. How the laboratory chooses to record and retain diagnostic data for internal use and storage, whether analog or digital, is still left to the discretion of the laboratory. However, final submission to the ICAMRL must be in digital format (CD or DVD). The appropriate viewer must also be included on the submitted CD or DVD.

Additional Changes in 2010

More changes are now in effect and being implemented for all IAC divisions, such as increased online communications, rolling application deadlines, an update to the Provisional Grant decision, new information regarding random audits and site visits and the move toward paperless submission. For complete details, read the IAC newsletter article Changes in 2010. »

Attend a Live Webinar

Free live Q&A webinars are offered to applicant laboratories to assist them in the accreditation process. An overview of the IAC Structure, the Standards, website and application are discussed. Common deficiencies and how to avoid them will also be included. A live Q&A session will follow the one-hour presentation.
