In March, senior Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) staff participated in an Advanced Imaging Accreditation kick-off meeting convened by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

As part of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA), by January 1, 2012, all nonhospital providers of advanced diagnostic imaging, inclusive of Nuclear Medicine, MR, CT and PET, must obtain accreditation as a condition for reimbursement. The IAC was approved by CMS in January 2010 to accredit suppliers seeking to furnish the technical component (TC) of advanced diagnostic imaging services under the Medicare program.

As a participant in the meeting, the IAC was informed on various topics such as the CMS organizational structure, accreditation’s role and expectations by CMS, the FDA and CMS collaborative initiative to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure from medical imaging, CMS’ plans for educating providers about the impending accreditation requirement and CMS resource websites. In addition, it was announced that CMS and their contractors will provide open door forums starting in May for the purpose of providing additional details about the Advanced Imaging Accreditation requirement.

Participants were notified of the official CMS website page, where providers and accrediting organizations can access up-to-date information including CMS postings of official policies related to the Advanced Imaging Accreditation requirement.

The IAC will continue to work closely with CMS and report news of the Advanced Imaging Accreditation requirement. Laboratories are encouraged to submit accreditation applications to the IAC on or before July 1, 2011 in order to allow sufficient time to achieve accreditation by the January 1, 2012 deadline.
