The ICAEL often receives requests from laboratories seeking a sample report that meets The Standards. It is widely known that laboratories utilizing a PACS (Picture Archiving and Communications Systems) can more readily facilitate a complete and standardized report. Conversely, those without PACS do have viable options for creating compliant reports. The sample report provided below is an excellent illustration as it contains all components required for compliance with The ICAEL Standards. Dr. Peter Sabia and Dr. Michael Lincoln of Associates in Cardiology, Silver Spring, Maryland, designed this report and graciously wish to share the template with the echocardiography community. Associates in Cardiology is a newly-accredited lab that does not own a PACS.
The laboratory used Microsoft Word to create a template that prompts the reader to comment on each structure required by The Standards. Dr. Sabia explains: "We have tried to develop a clear and concise standardized form that is easy to use and that directly answers the clinical question. Although it is not exhaustively comprehensive, it is designed to clearly transmit the important and required information and to directly address the clinical question." Note that although "normal ranges" and a numerical ejection fraction are not required, this laboratory chose to include them for clarity. You may download this report template from the Sample Documents page of the ICAEL website for use in your own echocardiography laboratory.
