The
ICAVL is pleased to welcome the Society of Radiologists in
Ultrasound (SRU) as an ICAVL sponsoring organization. On
November 2, SRU President Robert L. Bree, MD, accepted the ICAVL's
invitation to participate in the accreditation process. Bree
said, "On behalf of the officers, committees and members
of the SRU, I thank you for this opportunity to participate.
We look forward to many years of productive association."
The
SRU was formed in 1975 as a special interest group of radiologists
who specialized in ultrasound imaging. In 1989, the Society
contained approximately 60 members, with activities that included
an annual meeting serving as an informal semi-social setting
in which members could present research in ultrasound. In 1992,
the Society opened its membership to all Board-certified and
Board-eligible radiologists interested in ultrasound imaging.
Its informal meeting was expanded to a formal education course
including plenary sessions, socioeconomic panels and additional
educational opportunities. By 1994, its membership numbered
approximately 1,000 members. That same year, SRU was granted
a seat on the Council of the American College of Radiology (ACR).
In 1999, SRU obtained a seat in the American Medical Association
(AMA) House of Delegates. Today, the SRU's Educational Fund
grants awards of approximately $60,000 per year toward clinical
ultrasound research.
"I
look forward to the participation of the Society of Radiologists
in Ultrasound," said ICAVL Executive Director Sandra Katanick.
"The representation of radiologists specializing in ultrasound
will prove to be a valuable addition to the accreditation process.
Along with representatives of radiology from the Society of
Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (SCVIR), the Board
members representing SRU will ensure a well-balanced accreditation
program, reflecting the varying needs of vascular facilities
everywhere."
SRU
becomes the eleventh organization currently sponsoring the ICAVL.
In the coming months, two new Board members will be appointed
to the ICAVL Board Of Directors as representatives of the SRU.
They will have full voting privileges on issues including the
review process of individual applications for accreditation,
the future goals of ICAVL accreditation and the continued revision
of the Essentials and Standards to reflect current practices
of noninvasive vascular medicine.
